In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) that replicates in a laboratory what normally happens in the fallopian tubes, that is, the meeting between an egg and a sperm to form an embryo.
Hormonal Stimulation
The IVF process begins with hormonal stimulation of the ovaries to increase the number of eggs produced. The eggs are then collected using an ovarian puncture carried out under ultrasound control. The partner’s or a donor’s sperm are prepared in the laboratory to be then brought directly into contact with the eggs in a culture dish.
Selection
After fertilization, the obtained embryos are monitored in culture for a few days. The embryo or embryos of the highest quality are then selected to be transferred into the woman’s uterus, either in the same cycle (fresh embryo(s)) or in a subsequent cycle (frozen embryo(s)).
Embryo Transfer
Embryo transfer is a simple and painless step that is done vaginally. It is important to underline that the number of embryos transferred depends on the woman’s age and medical history. Generally, we transfer one or two embryos, in order to maximize the chances of success while limiting the risks of multiple pregnancy.
Pregnancy Test
After the transfer, you can resume normal daily activity. A pregnancy test is carried out about two weeks after the transfer to confirm or deny the pregnancy.
