It is estimated that 500 000 IVF cycles take place every year worldwide. InBelgium, the number of IVF attempts borders on 18 000 cycles. This means that more than 3000 babies are born inBelgiumevery year as a result of IVF (2.5 % of births).

The IVF success rate varies considerably according to the age of the woman.

On average, the pregnancy rate by embryo transfer is estimated at 30 % and the birth rate at 20 %. However, these figures fall dramatically among women over 40 years old and to less than 2 % among women over 43 years old.

The miscarriage rate is also directly linked to age as for spontaneous pregnancies (15 % at 30 years old, 50% at 42 years old).

Multiple pregnancy rates are also higher than among the general population and are linked to the number of embryos transferred.

The Belgian law limiting the number of embryos transferred has led to a multiple pregnancy rate of approximately 12 % for twins and 1 % for triplets.

The rate of chromosome abnormalities in children resulting from IVF/ICSI is slightly higher than in the general population (3 - 4 % instead of 2 - 3 %). Little is still known about this increase which requires further research in order to understand the source.
